Our History
Who We Are
PMB Machine Works is the natural evolution of Pioneer Motor Bearing Company’s development over our 100+ years in business to create not only one of the most respected babbitt bearing manufacturing and repair facilities in the U.S. but also a high precision machine shop, capable of making most anything from metal into the parts needed to support the mission of most any nuclear concern, as well as those of the Department of Defense (DoD).
Founded in 1920 in South San Francisco, CA, Pioneer Motor Bearing was, from its outset, an “after-market” supplier of bearings and bearing repairs to what was then the “motor car” industry, hence the “motor” in our name. However, over the past 70 years our business has been more focused on industrial equipment which led us to the beginning of our work for the Navy during the Korean War era.
Since that time, with the development of our engineering department, Pioneer was called on by the power industry to address the needs of everything from small gas turbines to the largest nuclear power generation equipment in the country. In fact, our current plant, in Kings Mountain, NC was developed specifically for and at the request of Westinghouse (now Siemens Energy) to support what was, in 1989, their new Charlotte turbine plant where Pioneer produced all bearings that came through that facility for the first 5 years and resulted in an “evergreen license agreement” which Siemens adopted during its takeover of Westinghouse and now Pioneer’s agreement is global in nature.
Other companies took note of this model and the success of it and we developed a similar arrangement with Alstom Power (now GE Vernova) to address most of its fleet. These agreements, along with many other arrangements with individual utilities and other industrial concerns have left us as one of the most prominent bearing specialists in the industry.
For generations, most of our machining equipment was manual in nature and served the needs of our customers well. However, with the various shifts in energy policy over the past two decades, Pioneer decided to begin marketing our manufacturing capabilities to the broader market as a stand alone product. This was the foundation of our new DBA, PMB Machine Works.
With literally hundreds of years of combined experience in our machine shop and the investment over the past 15 years in newer CNC equipment, including our latest investment in a 5-Axis DMG Mori Duo-Block 125 machining center, Pioneer is poised to take on the demanding standards of the DoD and other users of critical machined parts.
